Millcraft Investments has announced new details of its proposed Esplanade mixed-use development along the Ohio River in Pittsburgh’s Chateau neighborhood. The updated plans call for a 12-foot-deep lagoon–the first of its kind in Pittsburgh–and sandy beach for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking and paddle boarding. The lagoon will transition to a skating rink during the winter months.
The lagoon joins a host of other elements already announced for the Esplanade project, including a Ferris wheel, museum of “Pittsburgh firsts,” hotel, restaurants and residential units. The project is planned for the 15-acre former location of J. Allan Steel downriver of Rivers Casino and the West End Bridge. Millcraft officials anticipate the Esplanade breaking ground within the next 18 months.
