Temporary gallery is part of Riverlife’s #tbd project
What can be done to the highly-trafficked but undertutilized stretch of the Allegheny River trail under the Ft. Duquesne Bridge, between downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District and Point State Park?
Developed in partnership with a multitude of agencies and area non-profits, Riverlife presents ‘to be determined’, a temporary outdoor urban gallery meant to inspire and ignite discussion. RELATED: Read about our past #tbd projects that began in 2015.
‘to be determined’ 2016 is presented by Riverlife in partnership with Pittsburgh CAPA, City of Pittsburgh, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PennDOT District 11, and Clear Story Studios. The project is slated to run from June through September.
Statement from 2016’s ‘to be determined’ Artists:
Expressions is a collaborative effort between Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts’ (CAPA) Class of 2016 Creative Writing and Visual Arts majors. CAPA high school first opened its doors to middle schoolers in 2009, creating a 6-12 educational facility. The Class of 2016 was the first group of students to spend all 7 years obtaining the rigorous arts education in which CAPA specializes.
Students of CAPA are extremely familiar with Downtown and spend a lot of time exploring the different settings in the bustling neighborhood. During gym class, students walk from school to Point State Park, passing underneath the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Visual Arts major Sagar Kamath, a member of the Class of 2016, wanted to be able to leave a final “goodbye” present for the neighborhood that he and his peers have become accustomed to and he has led the development for Expressions.
This series is a combination between poetry and collaged artwork. Senior Creative Writing majors focus on various large projects through the year in order to develop their writing portfolios. One of their first projects was to create a poetry chapbook. Each chapbook was carefully constructed using research and personal stories to create a series of poems that explored any theme that the author chose. Each writer was then asked to choose one poem and submit it to the artists, who were assigned a poem to interpret. The artists produced illustrations and collages that were then dismantled and reconstructed to produce a series of images that aim intrigue the observer through the new formed visual dynamism.
The panels displayed here were carefully arranged to provide the viewer with the best possible experience through color choices and the selection of the poetic quote. Expressions hopes to inspire the viewers to think of all the possibilities and stories that are created when students are enriched with an arts education and are able to display their artwork to create a more unique space.
