Job Description:
The Communications and Outreach Internship at Riverlife will provide practical hands-on training and experience while assisting Riverlife in achieving long-term objectives. The Communications and Outreach Intern is responsible for managing and creating content for Riverlife’s social media accounts under the direction of the Director of Communications. The Intern will also assist at Riverlife’s annual fundraiser event, Party at the Pier, and other organizational events.
This is a part-time, seasonal internship requiring 15-20 hours/week between May-August 2024, and has flexible start and end dates. This position is hybrid, but some on site collaboration and event work will be required.
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications include:
Communications and Marketing
- Coordinate weekly strategies for social media content across Riverlife’s Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts.
- Reinforce key initiatives for the organization including Completing the Loop, The Sister Bridges Experience, 25th anniversary, renovations to and the repositioning of Allegheny Landing and Allegheny Riverfront Park, and additional priorities as they arise.
- Build brand materials for organizational use like slide decks, Canva templates, social media frames, and additional materials to bring Riverlife brand into alignment across a variety of tools, brainstorming additional tools with the Director of Communications.
- Develop and implement a strategy for growing audience engagement through social strategy and on the riverfronts.
- Analyze and strategize a repositioning strategy for Riverlife’s website as the organization enters a new phase of mission driving work.
- Develop email marketing campaigns by building, working on list segmentation and hygiene, and schedule campaigns in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
- Strategize thought leadership development around “artful play” and “riverbank eco-restoration” as need arises for 2024.
Events
- Assist in developing and implementing additional virtual and in-person community programs and riverfront activation programming, including riverfront pop-up events, health and wellness programs, public art initiatives and other activities to advance Riverlife’s mission.
Administration
- Attend required meetings; assist with note taking and preparing materials for reports.
- Conduct research on social media, marketing, and trends and report out to senior staff.
- Assist with photo and server file management.
- Assist other staff members with day-to-day office administration as needed.
Other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Experience & Abilities:
- Background or demonstrated interest in communications, event planning and implementation, urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental studies, community and economic development, and/or riverfront improvement projects
- Prior experience posting and promoting original and engaging content on social media
- Prior experience or and interest in planning special events
- Excellent writing skills for both professional and social media audiences
- Fluency in Google Suite (docs, sheets, slides, drive), Canva, and CRM software.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator or similar photo editing and design programs
- Familiarity with WordPress or similar website content management systems
- Photography, video editing and/or graphic design skills a plus
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to help produce special events
- Light physical activity, including some lifting of items up to 25 lbs., may be requested
Compensation Details:
This is a part-time, seasonal internship and reports to the Director of Development. A monthly stipend of $1,000 per month will be provided. A flexible, hybrid work environment is available, with some work taking place remotely and some required in-person hours taking place at the Riverlife offices at One North Shore Center, 12 Federal St., Suite 130, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
