In September, Riverlife received a $30,000 grant from Alcoa Foundation to support an environmental study of riverfront habitat at the headwaters of the Ohio River on the Pittsburgh’s North Shore. Riverlife is partnering on the project with the US Army Corps of Engineers who have designated the location in the federal interest.
Alcoa Foundation grant funds are being used to complete environmental and vegetation assessments that will inform proposed plans for restoration improvements that will create a safer, more diverse, natural habitat. Alcoa Corporate Center is less than one mile from the study area and connected to it by the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
Total project study costs are projected to be $258,000. The North Shore aquatic ecosystem study is funded as a partnership between Riverlife and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition to private funding from Alcoa Foundation, other funding has been received from The Richard King Mellon Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and The Buhl Foundation.
Riverlife thanks the foundation for their generosity in supporting this initiative. Read more about the North Shore riverfront habitat study.
