Stephan Bontrager has been a part of the Riverlife team since 2009, serving first as Communications Director before advancing to the role of Vice President, Communications and Outreach. Stephan manages organizational communications and public relations, marketing, community engagement and special events. During his time at Riverlife, he produced the grand reopening celebration for the $40 million renovation of Point State Park and its signature fountain, as well as celebrations and media coverage for Riverlife projects at South Shore Riverfront Park, the Mon Wharf Landing, Allegheny Landing and Strip District Riverfront Park. Stephan is also the producer of Riverlife’s annual fundraiser gala Party at the Pier.

Prior to Riverlife, Stephan was Director of Education and Community Engagement for public radio station 91.3 fm WYEP, where he also served as the on-air Midday Mix host from 2002-2007. Stephan was honored as one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40” for his work in developing community public broadcasting programs and was recently recognized as a “Who’s Next in Communications” honoree by The Incline for his nonprofit communications work at Riverlife. He received his Bachelor of Communication degree from Goshen College in northern Indiana and a Master of Journalism and Mass Communication degree from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.

He originally hails from Denver, Colo., and is proud to claim Pittsburgh as his adopted hometown. Stephan has served on the Board of Directors for The Sprout Fund and Community Advisory Board for WYEP, and was previously Board Chair for the Pittsburgh Urban Leadership Service Experience (PULSE).
